King Bed in a 10x12 Bedroom: Does It Fit? Measured
The short answer: A king bed with two nightstands fits a 10x12 bedroom comfortably: 4 of 4 arrangements are usable, and the recommended layout keeps every walk from the door at 30 inches or wider. With two nightstands, the room also takes a dresser, but then has no usable place for a desk.
Measured with the door near one corner and an IKEA MALM king frame. If your room or your frame is different, enter your own room and bed and get every layout tested for $19.
What fits with a king bed in a 10x12 bedroom
Every arrangement below was placed and measured, not estimated. A layout counts as usable when the door opens fully, every drawer pulls all the way out and every walk is at least 18 inches wide; it counts as comfortable when nothing is tight. Each row gives the narrowest walk of the recommended layout for that furniture (walks of 36 inches or more are all plenty, so they are not told apart), then how many arrangements are usable. The space at the foot of the bed is not part of the test while a side is open, so the recommended layout below gives it separately. The full rules are on how we measure.
| With the king bed | What the measuring found |
|---|---|
| King bed and two nightstands | Fits comfortably. Walk 30 inches; 4 of 4 usable |
| Two nightstands and a dresser | Tight fit. Walk 20 inches; 82 of 136 usable |
| Two nightstands and a desk | Does not fit: none of 116 is usable |
| Two nightstands, a dresser and a desk | Does not fit: none of 2,820 is usable |
| King bed and one nightstand | Fits comfortably. Walk 36 inches or more; 17 of 29 usable |
| One nightstand and a dresser | Fits comfortably. Walk 36 inches or more; 434 of 981 usable |
| One nightstand and a desk | Fits comfortably. Walk 36 inches or more; 82 of 850 usable |
| One nightstand, a dresser and a desk | Fits comfortably. Walk 36 inches or more; 1,531 of 20,583 usable |
| King bed with no nightstand | Fits comfortably. Walk 36 inches or more; 15 of 31 usable |
| No nightstand, and a dresser | Fits comfortably. Walk 36 inches or more; 415 of 1,103 usable |
The best layout with a king bed
- One side of the bed: 30 7/8 inches free.
- The other side: 30 7/8 inches free.
- At the foot of the bed: 36 7/8 inches free.
- Narrowest point on any walk from the door: 30 inches, on the way to one side of the bed.
A king bed with a dresser and a desk
With two nightstands, a dresser and a desk together have no usable place: none of 2,820 arrangements is usable. A dresser on its own fits (82 of 136 arrangements are usable); a desk has no usable place. Take away one nightstand and the picture changes: with one nightstand, a dresser and a desk both fit: 1,531 of 20,583 arrangements are usable and 419 are comfortable. The recommended one keeps every walk from the door at 36 inches or wider.
The layout that looks fine and is not
This arrangement of a king bed, two nightstands, a dresser and a desk leaves 30 7/8 inches or more on each open side of the bed, more than the 18 inches this page asks for, so it passes the bed-side check. The problem is getting there: the walk to one side of the bed narrows to 10 inches. A tape measure along the side of the bed would not catch it.
A queen bed in the same room
The same room, with the same door and window, was measured with a queen bed too: the same IKEA MALM frame in the queen size, 66 1/8 inches wide. With two nightstands the queen fits comfortably, with every walk at 36 inches or wider; add a dresser and a desk and 1,987 of 9,689 arrangements are usable. The whole table, with full and twin beds, is on the 10x12 bedroom layout page.
How this was measured
The room is 120 inches by 144 inches, wall to wall. It has one door, 30 inches wide, that opens into the room, with its opening starting 6 inches from a corner, and one window, 36 inches wide, centered on the opposite wall. If your door or window is somewhere else, the numbers change, so measure your own room wall to wall at floor level before relying on them; the under-bed measurement checklist uses the same habits.
The bed is the IKEA MALM king frame, 82 1/4 inches wide and 83 1/8 inches long. It is wider and longer than a king mattress, which is why a page that sizes the room from the mattress can reach a different answer. The other pieces, where the bed-side guideline comes from and how every number is rounded are on how we measure. Mark the bed on your floor with tape and walk around it, as the small bedroom layout guide describes, before you order anything.
Is your room or your bed different?
This page measures a 10 by 12 foot room with the door near one corner, and a king frame 82 1/4 inches wide. A different room or frame can change the answer. Enter your own room and bed and get every layout tested and the best ones drawn to scale: $19, within 24 hours.
