8x8 Bedroom Layout: What Actually Fits, Measured
An 8x8 foot bedroom is 64 square feet of floor. In the room measured here, no bed fits with two nightstands; with one, the largest that fits is a queen.
The short answer: With the queen bed measured here, 66 1/8 inches wide, and a nightstand 2 inches from each side, an 8x8 bedroom has no layout that fits: no wall is long enough for them. With one nightstand, the queen fits comfortably, with every walk at 36 inches or wider. Add a dresser and none of 4 arrangements is usable. A desk instead of the dresser has no usable place: the one arrangement that fits is not usable. A dresser and a desk together have no usable place: no arrangement fits. Neither a full nor a twin bed has a usable layout with two nightstands.

Which bed size fits an 8x8 room
- Twin: no usable layout with two nightstands; with one nightstand, a dresser and a desk it fits, narrowest walk 29 inches, with only 17 5/8 inches at the foot of the bed.
- Full: no usable layout with two nightstands; with one nightstand it fits, narrowest walk 36 inches or more, with only 17 5/8 inches at the foot of the bed, but not with a dresser and a desk as well.
- Queen: no usable layout with two nightstands; with one nightstand it fits, narrowest walk 36 inches or more, with only 12 7/8 inches at the foot of the bed, but not with a dresser and a desk as well.
- King: not measured in this room.
What fits in an 8x8 bedroom
Every arrangement below was placed and measured, not estimated. A layout counts as usable when the door opens fully, every drawer pulls all the way out and every walk is at least 18 inches wide; it counts as comfortable when nothing is tight. Each cell gives the narrowest walk of the recommended layout for that furniture (walks of 36 inches or more are all plenty, so they are not told apart), then how many arrangements are usable. The full rules are on how we measure.

Why a queen bed and two nightstands do not fit
Side by side, the queen bed and a nightstand on each side, 2 inches from the frame, take up 106 3/8 inches of wall, and every wall in this room is 96 inches long, so no wall is long enough for them. Even pushed flush against the frame, with no gap at all, they still do not fit. A narrower frame would fit: at this length, with the same two nightstands, anything up to 46 5/8 inches wide clears the door. The queen layouts below use one nightstand.
The best layout with a queen bed
With one nightstand, this is the recommended layout.
- One side of the bed: 29 7/8 inches free.
- The other side stands against the wall.
- At the foot of the bed: 12 7/8 inches free.
- Every walk from the door is at least 36 inches wide.
A queen bed, a dresser and a desk
With two nightstands there is no arrangement at all: the bed and nightstands alone do not fit. With one nightstand, no arrangement fits either.
What a full or twin bed buys you
A full bed has no usable layout with two nightstands. With one nightstand it takes a dresser, but then leaves no usable place for a desk. A twin bed has no usable layout with two nightstands. With one nightstand, a twin bed takes a dresser and a desk together: 2 of 114 arrangements are usable, and the recommended one keeps every walk at 29 inches or wider.

How these layouts were measured
The room is 96 inches by 96 inches, wall to wall. It has one door, 30 inches wide, that opens into the room, with its opening starting 6 inches from a corner, and one window, 36 inches wide, centered on the opposite wall. In every arrangement, each nightstand stands 2 inches from the bed. If your door or window is somewhere else, the numbers change, so measure your own room wall to wall at floor level before relying on them; the under-bed measurement checklist uses the same habits.
The furniture is IKEA's, at the sizes IKEA lists in the US: MALM bed frames, a HEMNES nightstand, a MICKE desk and a LILLBERGET dresser. The full list, where the bed-side guideline comes from and how every number is rounded are on how we measure. Treat these plans as a shortlist and mark the layout you pick on your floor with tape, as the small bedroom layout guide describes, before you move anything heavy.
